The Natural Wonders of Arkansas
Little Rock, capital and most populated city in Arkansas, is
located in the center of the state, located
next to the Arkansas River. A small outcrop of
rock, located on the south bank of the river,
originally called "la petite roche" by a French explorer in the
early 18th century, eventually became
known as Little Rock. River
boats, canoes and various other modes of river transportation
used the outcrop as a landmark to navigate and decipher where
they were in regards to the locale. This area was the beginning
of the Ouachita Mountains and the end of the flat delta land and
foothills. Because of this
familiarity, early settlers used the area to cross the river,
and soon a trading center grew out of the wilderness.
Since Little Rock has become the hub of Arkansas, in more ways
than just economical, historical or culturally, it is the center
between the southwest and southeast. The leaders of the area,
both old and new, are involved in the increase of industry,
financial institutions and enlarging the port facilities. Since
this city is the old stumping grounds of former President Bill
Clinton, the city is in the midst of a
great expansion. President Clinton still visits the city
regularly and the residents have many stories about his jaunts;
as a jogger and connoisseur of great Little Rock cuisine. Little
Rock is more than just the epicenter of Arkansas, the south west
and east, and the hub of growing industries. It bridges the gap
between the old south and the new south and has been nicknamed
the "City of Roses" because of its numerous beautiful parks and
gardens. It is very unusual to see a city that preserves the
historically old homes with new one; as well as old historical
buildings with new steel and glass skyscrapers.
City of the infamous crisis in the mid-fifties, when nine
African-American students were enrolled in the high school, then
denied entrance, President Eisenhower had to send Federal troops
to ensure their safety. Perhaps one of the most significant
moments in the Civil Rights movement, the incident gained world
notoriety. Since that time, many colleges, law and medical
schools and the University of Arkansas have grown. The old state
house, an impressive monument to architecture during the 1800s,
sits in the city and has become an awesome museum, with several
other museums, the Clinton presidential library and the Arkansas
Arts Center. The city manufacturing
industry continues to grow, and one of the main ones is to
process and ship; timber, bauxite, poultry, beef, fish and agro
products. There are several institutions located there, as well
as a great symphony, which puts on over 30 concerts every year.
